A Brush With Art:-
The S&D Through The Eyes Of Roger F. Jones

Memories of the S&D by Roger F. Jones

My first memories of the S&D are when as young lads my friends and I use to walk up to Norton Hill Station to watch the trains. On seeing the Pines Express one day, I asked a man why it was called that. He said that travelling through pines forests near Bournemouth every day made the train smell of pines and that’s where the name came from. Also I remember well again as a 13 year old with friends experimenting smoking my father’s tobacco on the Pines Express. Hence one of my winter scene paintings came about with the Pines Express chugging past Norton Hill Station during a heavy snowstorm.

Another fond memory is of us young lads watching the trains at the Five Arches. We used to try and race the trains on the GWR line and were always fascinated to watch the S&D trains trundle over the top of the arches. Hence another painting.

Painting #2 - ‘Full Steam At The Five Arches 1958’
After visiting Radstock Museum and reading records that say on the 8th September, 1962 ‘Evening Star’ hauled the last Pines Express! I thought this would make a good subject to paint! Hence a recent painting of mine.
