S&D 50 Commemorations
on the Gartell Light Railway
S&D 50 themed open days
5th & 6th March

From standard gauge to narrow gauge - on March 5th & 6th, the Gartell Light Railway ran special trains from their base at Common Lane Farm, Yenston, and over part of the S&D formation near Templecombe.

On Saturday - a tribute was paid to the Bailey Gate milk train that used to run in the afternoon from Templecombe and return. The fireman today was Mike Baker who worked his last S&D train 50 years ago to the day.

On Sunday - to replicate the use of ‘double-heading’ on the S&D - (which was once a frequent sight on the line to take trains up the 1:53 gradient to the summit at Masbury), two of their steam locomotives were coupled together to pull an impressive number of nine passenger coaches.
